Last Past The Post: Chicago's Olympic Bid
There's been much excitement in the entire Chicagoland area lately as you might expect ahead of the announcement of the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games. It's been quite fascinating, but not as fascinating as the response of people now they've discovered they didn't get it after all.
I'm not naming names, but I can assure you I have been chatting with some of Naperville's movers and shakers, and hearing some interesting comments.
"We didn't get it because the rest of the world still hates America," said one.
"It's a snub to the United States by the rest of the world. We sent our President and Oprah Winfrey and still we didn't get it! It should have been a shoe-in." (American for foregone conclusion).
"Obama went to all the bother of going to Copenhagen and we still didn't get it!"
"So what that the Queen of Spain attended the final appeal? They only care about her in Europe!"
"Maybe some people still blame the US for the world recession, but we've got President Obama now so it's ok!"
I'd hope it was the sudden shock that led to such comments, but if I was basing this posting on the reasoning of just a few Americans, it would seem they do actually believe it is their right to rule the world and no one else matters!
I'm as pro American as the next person waiting for her Green Card, but come on, get real! Everyone knows the US will sweep the board when it comes to the games themselves. They have the best sportsmen in the world, so they need to show a bit of sportsmanship now.
We all know what a great nation this is. But unfortunately there are a few other countries on the world map. In fact entire other continents who've never hosted the Games, like South America until now.
I wonder if the problem isn't down to the American Press, particularly in Chicago. I applaud how they flew the flag for Chicago. They were just so darned patriotic. The downside was locals believed them and it never occurred to them they could possibly lose, let alone be out first.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. The world does not revolve around Chicago, and it most certainly does not revolve around Naperville. Happily, life goes on . . .
