Green Light District

I've never been an insect fan, to be honest, they bug me, but there are some fascinating ones around at the moment. They come out at dusk and are commonly known as fire flies. The reason they are so compelling is that I've never seen one in England, and they are simply magical to look at. If you sit out at dusk you may be forgiven for thinking that embers are flying about from a nearby bonfire. But they are actually these amazing little creatures that literally light up. It looks for all the world that your garden is inhabited by fairies holding tiny green lanterns to light their path.
The reality is they are quite ugly creatures who use their lights to attract members of the opposite sex for mating purposes. So in effect, what I have been experiencing is that my garden has turned into a red light district, where a shining light means the girls are game for anything...

  • Actually Hilary, those game for anything girls can be quite wicked - there are different species of the fireflies and each family has differing light patterns - so those naughty females fake another light show, then eat the hapless male who hones in on it! How's that for nasty? Apparently the larvae also light up - hence glow worms! All this info per Yahoo - another source of light in this confusing world!
