Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly Away Home...

In England there was always one day of the summer you had to be very wary of. It was flying ant day. The day every ant grew wings and took to the skies in swarms. Now I know this sounds like the plot of a horror film, but when you're six years old walking home from school, it is indeed horrible. The ants get everywhere.
"Quick, close the windows," my mother would warn. "We don't want any in the house." So we'd stifle inside in the heat until they'd gone. It was only in more recent years I discovered the ants were doing what the birds and the bees do, only a little more publically.
I was happy to discover that this sort of thing doesn't happen in Naperville and people here are only attacked by cicadas every 17 years.
So you can imagine my horror when I was out yesterday afternoon and hit by swarms of ladybugs (or ladybirds as we call them in England). They were everywhere, particularly around the entrance of J.Jill in downtown Naperville, where they were probably over excited about their latest sale.
The trouble with ladybugs is that they are heavier than ants and have a tendancy to hit you in the eye like tiny bullets. Hope it's not too long until they fly away home.

  • When we lived in Scotland the yearly invasion came in the form of tiny little flying creatures known as "berrybugs" The hateful little things crawled on you as far as they could, and when stopped by elastic (pants, sock tops, etc) they would congregate and bite - and itch, itch, itch! Oh, and they would infest the dog's paws, necessitating daily "debugging" sessions!! I prefer ladybirds with their polka dots..
