A Rotarian Is Born...

Induction conjures up all sorts of strange memories for me. When I was due to be enrolled as a Brownie, it was put off until the following week and I was heartbroken. When I was induced with Orphan No 1 it was pretty unpleasant experience (and not because of the final result before you start, Orphan No 2).
So it was with some trepidation that I was today inducted as a member of Naperville Rotary Club. To be honest it was fairly simply stuff. Three of us were introduced to a room of 120 or so, and simply asked to say a few words.
Since I had said a lot more than just a few words a few weeks ago at my first (and no doubt last) public appearance, I wasn't really sure what more I could say. So I hung back to be the last to speak.
The first lady was representing a restaurant chain. Uh oh. Someone with a real job. The second represented a local charity. Even worse. Who was I representing? I have no real job, and must now be the only person in the country who actually pays money to volunteer! All I can see in the immediate future is that any money I do earn, I'll end up giving to a worthy cause sponsored by the Rotary Club.
I knew this would be my only opportunity to canvass for work, since Rotarians are not supposed to network, but I even got that wrong. Ignoring my notes, I found myself telling the slightly bemused crowd that my plan was to write a musical about the history of Naperville, and I wanted them to help me organise it. They must have thought I was nuts, and I certainly wasn't greeted afterwards by hoardes of interested people wanting to sign up.
Still, it seems I'm now going to be writing for their on line newsletter. Just hope I can afford it...
