The Great White Way

Don’t know you if know, but they’ve had a little bit of snow in Washington
just recently. Actually it was record breaking amounts, but as we taxied
to our hotel they seem to have done a good job clearing the roads. So when
the concierge said it was only a 20 minute walk to the Lincoln Memorial
on a crispy sunny afternoon, it seemed a reasonable thing to do.
It was actually the only day to go – I wanted to wish Mr Lincoln a happy 201st birthday.
When we married on February 12th 29 years ago, it never occurred to me it was Lincoln’s
birthday, so it seemed very surreal to be able to visit Washington DC on that very day.
To get there we had to walk along the Mall – you know that famous five mile
stretch of greenery, passing the Washington Monument. Well it’s not green at the moment.
To be fair, quite a lot of the journey had been plowed, but not all of it.
Clinging onto Grumpy for dear life, the only way I can describe it was like
we were walking along a luge route.
Finally we made it to our destination and slithered up the
steps to pay our respects to the great man. The statue is
actually 19 feet high, so it’s just as well he’s sitting down.
Happy Birthday Mr President.
